W Hughes & Son, Single Ply Membranes
- Life expectancies as defined by third party assessments. Longer service lives are feasible and would alter the net present value outcomes. Expected service life criteria include a detailed understanding of the molecular chemistry of the plastics, additives such as plasticizers and production methods
- Life cycle costs are based on a concrete warm roof construction with simple rectangular plan. Costs include: single ply membranes 1.2 – 1.5mm thick, perimeter upstands, gutter, outlets and protrusions, insulation and vapour control layer. No allowance for walkways or access. In use costs include inspections, minor repairs and occasional cleaning
- Costs used are averages. Best value should be determined from a whole life assessment of roof covering options which satisfy project specific criteria, as much of the cost lies in the detailing and relative costs between options is marginal
Single ply membrane options.
As a flat roof covering option, single ply membranes offer many whole-life performance benefits: including quick installation, the potential to prefabricate, ease of repair and good service performance.
Unfortunately, there is no specific performance standard relating to single-ply membranes as EN 13956, the European standard for flexible waterproofing sheets, is currently a draft.
Products with third-party certification provide a guarantee of meeting relevant test criteria and usually include an indication of the expected service life based on accelerated ageing tests and performance in use. The ability of membranes to withstand solar heating is one of the key properties for durable performance.
A substantial range of single-ply membrane material options are difficult to compare directly as the testing parameters do not allow this. Below we consider some of the more common options.
W Hughes & Son, Built Up Roof Insulation Systems (BUR)
High performance roofing systems, designed to last from 5 to 25 years to first maintenance, which can be independently guaranteed.
Cold or hot applied, ranging from a simple re - coat of an existing membrane, to the complete strip-off and reinstallation,
of a new (BUR) System with new insulation to satisfy the changes in legislation and thermal efficiency standards for part L building regulations.
Tapered Insulation Systems can also be designed and installed to reduce surface water and alleviate any ponding on a roof, thereby reducing potential slip hazards and problems from additional loading.
To complement our High Performance Roofing Systems we offer Cold, Hot and mechanically fixed and Inverted Built Up Roof Insulation Schemes.
These can be carried out in the forms of
- New Build
- Complete strip-off of a perished roof and new installation (Refurbishment)
- Overlaying of an existing system to improve the U-Value (Refurbishment)

Tapered Insulation Systems can be designed and installed to reduce surface water and alleviate any ponding on a roof, thereby reducing potential slip hazards and problems from additional loading.
Inverted Insulation Systems because the waterproofing is located at the bottom of the system it can be expected to have a life in excess of that obtained in an exposed situation as it is protected from mechanical damage, UV degradation, and temperature extremes. A completed Inverted Roof will also be resistant to foot traffic and exhibit a high compressive strength.

Cold Applied Seamless High Performance Systems, incorporating a Root Resistant Membrane, Insulation and Filtration Layer which can be expected to have a life in excess of the Manufacturers 25 years guarantee. The system can then be finished either with; ballast, pavers or alternatively planted with sedum matting or a whole variety of plants (including small trees and shrubs) which can help to improve the carbon footprint of the building and its impact on the environment. info@whughes.co.uk

Upgrading existing cladded buildings and structures can be done by either re-cladding, over cladding or even applying a liquid system to them, giving old tired looking buildings, not only a new lease of life, but also long term cost effective solutions to a buildings thermal efficiency.
Over cladding can mean minimal interruption of existing operations within the building, subject to the main structure being able to support the over cladding, this can be done onto fibre cement, brickwork, blockwork and even existing steel profiles.
Application of a liquid system over the existing cladding can also mean minimal interruption of existing operations within the building, this system can also be applied onto fibre cement, brickwork, blockwork and even existing steel profiles.
If the existing area is porous, then a sealed vapour barrier would be put in place when over cladding, this would be laid on top of the existing structure before any insulation material was put in place.
W Hughes & Son, Surface Coatings for Hygiene Control
W Hughes hygeine coatings for walls and ceilings have been developed to provide complete long-term protection against mould growth, bacteria and other micro-organisms.
The resulting finishes are hard-wearing, easy to clean and free from joints, seams and other fixings that might harbour dirt and bacteria. Fluid application is simple, by means of brush, roller or airless spray, prodviding a truly seamless finish irrespective of the configuration of the substrate.
W Hughes hygeine coatings provide unique benefits wherever strict hygeine controls apply and comply with all relevant international hygeine legislation.
Unique Protection - Effective aganist most micro-organisms, including E.coli, salmonella, penicillium and hospital-acquired infections (HAI's) such as MRSA.
Durability - W Hughes hygeine coatings are exceptionally durable. Simple re-coating is all that is required to restore performance at the end of the products lifespan, which is at least three times that of many convcentional hygeine protection systems suvch as fungicidal paints.
Safe and Effective - W Hughes coatings protect ganist bacteria and mould without the toxic leaching and loss of performance characteristice of many other anti-bacterial treatments.
Vapour Permeable - Total protection is provided, while allowing the substrate to breathe.
Speed of Application - Liquid application cuts time on all aspects of substrate, irrespective of surface features and complex configuration.
Elastomeric - Coatings expand and contract with thermal movement of the substrate without bacteria-harbouring cracking or flaking.

Our wall coatings are often unequaled by the use conventional paints.
The systems we can provide exhibit exceptionally long life spans and provide
decorative and weatherproof protection.
Our range offers guaranteed weatherproof protection and for applications where additional strength is required, such as for the encapsulation of asbestos cement cladding, or aged rendered walls we also offer glass fibre reinforcement that can be embedded into the coating.
